Mark: 3 (1-lowest, 5-highest)

Description:
Very few naked people now. Frankly disappointing. Just overpill from the expensive hotel on the other island. Croatia is not how it used to be.

Thanks Richard P for this report.

How to get there: Take a boat from the town of Rovinj, approx two boats an hour. But if you are staying at the Hotel Sol Club Istra walk across the sea path across from the Hotel.

Facilities at the beach
Shower Toilete Restaurant Bar Water sports Sports Water

Mark: 4 (1-lowest, 5-highest)

Description:
Red Island is a small pleasant island, its parameter is approx 1 mile, its pebbly and rocky and there are plenty of pretty and secluded areas for nude bathing although the Island itself is FKK so you can walk round the island completety bare if you like. The bar and restaurant are excellent and the views are lovely. Make sure you pack some sea sandals as you can look quite funny walking out of the sea avoiding those rough pebbles under your feet.
All round though very nice and strongly recommended and if you love swimming the sea is very clear and warm.

Thanks visitor for this report.

How to get there: On foot across the causeway from the Hotel Istra on St. Andrea island.

Facilities at the beach
Shower Toilete Restaurant Bar Water sports Sports Water

Mark: 1 (1-lowest, 5-highest)

Description:
Unfortunately Red Island (St. Andrea & Maskin) has undergone a recent transformation due to the weather and the increase in tourist traffic such that the landscape and the visitors have changed roles.

A violent storm 2002 denuded the island of almost all of its mature trees thus removing most of the shade. It is therefore rather barren and many people now take their sunshades and stands.

Whilst the island has become denuded, its visitors have become predominantly textile. Although the island is FKK designated, the entrance sign on the causeway is mainly ignored by the numerous tourists coming over by the boat-load throughout the day and the fleet of Italian motor cruisers who moor off-shore and then swim from the rocks. There is now insufficient room for the textiles on St. Andrea so they have spread along the causeway onto Maskin and then gone in both directions. Naturists have effectively been pushed into three small enclaves but even there you will find unenlightened textile family parties setting up camp around you. Although I was happy to walk parts of the perimeter path in the nude I only saw three other people doing it during the whole week. Everyone else was clothed. A great shame, but it looks as if this is one site we are close to losing.

Having said that however, the swimming in warm crystal clear waters is beautiful but access to the sea can be a bit precarious over the huge barnacled rocks. Definitley not a place for paddlers and strolling around.

This is our experience during the high season and things may be much more pleasant at other times of the year.

Thanks Deryck & Fran Johnson for this report.
